Should you send out Save the Dates?

The answer to this is always mixed. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Save the Dates and did send them out 12 months before my big day, purely to make sure everyone I invited could be there!

Here are just a few reasons why I love Save the Dates:

  1. Everyone has busy lives and if your family and friends are anything like mine, they will certainly appreciate the heads up for their busy diaries.
  2. They will give you an early indication of guest numbers and a rough idea of people who may not be able to attend.
  3. This helps with your budgeting.
  4. They increase the chances of your nearest and dearest being able to attend, as once they have your date pencilled in their diary, they are more likely to plan their holidays around your date.
  5. They start creating excitement with your family and friends, and you will notice people will start talking to you about your big day.
  6. They set the tone for your wedding, as they are often the first glimpse people have of your theme.
    They help your guests to plan ahead by booking accommodation and making travel arrangements.

If lots of your guests will be traveling to your wedding, I would suggest Save the Dates are a must, your guests will thank you for them!

So, you have decided to send Save the Dates, now there are lots of other questions to consider…

  1. When should you send them? This will be highly dependent on the location and date of your wedding. A rough guide would be anywhere between 9-12 months before your wedding day. If your wedding is being held abroad, or falls on a major holiday, you will need to give your guests more notice and I would suggest no less than 12 months.
  2. Who should you send them to? Anyone you are planning on sending invitations too. It’s a good idea to make it clear on the Save the Date, who is actually invited and if this includes plus ones and children. Remember, if you send someone a Save the Date you are obliged to send them an invitation when the time comes.
  3. Should they match your theme? If you are planning on sending paper Save the Dates, I would suggest matching them to your theme. There are however, lots of different ideas for Save the Dates such as fridge magnets, diary stickers and keyrings, which are harder to match.

If you do decide Save the Dates are not for you, I would advise sending your invitations out earlier than normal, so your guests have plenty of time to make their arrangements.
